My First P2E Experience

My First P2E Experience

Read time: 3 mins 19 secs

This is a weekly newsletter brought to you by a former fashion editor, aka me, Lina. I will particularly cover digital wearables and their role in the gaming and fashion industry.

The Wearables Daily will feature and acknowledge all industry talents and tell their stories.

SOMETHING NEW

Part of this newsletter is about something I don't know myself well, but I thought, why not try to figure it out here with you?

So as a Decentraland Metaverse lover and citizen, I just couldn't ignore the rising popularity of P2E games. Why? I recently got a message inviting me to a tour of one of the most popular Decentraland P2E games - Wilderness. Wilderness recently successfully passed for a grant from the Decentraland DAO treasury to keep building and improving the game. The community has spoken about what kind of games they want to play. And here today, as I am writing this, I had my very first P2E experience! And I loved it!

First, I want to disclose that this is not a sponsored post, and I am genuinely researching how the game works.

Second, don't mind little mistakes in my wording; sometimes, adapting a specific gamer jargon takes time.

What to wear?

Like many P2E games, this game, too, uses wearables to add certain utilities. There's no need to buy anything to enter a game, but if you want some upgrades, you can shop inside the game at the bazaar, where you can spend your hard-earned $WLDY, Wilderness tokens.

#1 Pride Wizard: Bonus : +w2% $WLDY Drop

#2 Gen 2 Royal Magician's Crown: Bonus : +4 Defence, +7 Magic, +2% $WLDY Drop rate

#3 Staff of Zeus: Bonus: +4 Magic

Things to do

#1 Parkour challenge

Parkour to earn your tokens. 1st place for the best parkour starts with 10,000 $WLDY. (That's right, use your avatar to parkour, haha!)

#2 Fight the Evil

After spending 15 minutes in the training zone, you'll unlock the option to enter the Evil NPC zone, where you can also earn some tokens!

MY KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Wearables are an inseparable part of P2E games. They reward with bonuses, extra powers, and some good looks.

  • Parkour is harder than it looks like.

  • Community is the key while building a game like this.

P2E 🔥 METAVERSE

In its 2021 annual report, The Blockchain Game Alliance says that NFT games generated $2.32 billion in revenue in the third quarter of 2021, or 22% of all NFT trading volume. Making the most waves was Axie Infinity — with its much-publicized popularity in the Philippines during COVID-19 lockdowns — which became the first blockchain game to top $1 billion in NFT sales.

The report reveals that 68% of BGA members felt the growth was attributable to the P2E sector, and 85% said true ownership of digital goods in games is the secret sauce behind blockchain game successes.

How to choose your first P2E game?

It isn't easy to give a one-size-fits-all answer. As much as saying it has become a cliche, the space is still so new, and we are still "early." When thinking about web3 gaming, I think of the audience as two distinct groups with some core similarities. There is the *Pure-Gamer* who only cares about playing a badass game. They don't want to hear excuses about the limitations of working within Decentraland or how "early" they are, so they should expect that there are bugs. Then there is the *Creator-Gamer*, who loves games but has aspirations to work on games. Pure-Gamers should look for the biggest and most robust game that appeals to their taste. This is easier said than done at the moment, but it will get easier and easier as we move into the future. Creator-Gamers should look to find small projects and new games just getting started and led by talented people they respect. I'm of the personal belief that the best ROI in web3 gaming will come from helping small projects with a combination of having fun playing and contributing to Quality Assurance/Design work.

What role do wearables/NFTs play in P2E concepts?

I don't like the "Play to Earn," I don't think it does a good job setting player expectations. I'm not sure if I like web3-gaming or blockchain-gaming much better, but it's critical for people entering the space to understand that none of the existing economies are designed for 100% of users to make money. P2E is about "Digital Ownership," so you can do whatever you want with the items you spent your time earning. Games aren't supposed to be about making money. That's called a job. Games are about having fun. If you aren't having fun while PLAYING your P2E, you should consider finding a new project. NFTs, Wearables, and the blockchain ARE the foundation of P2E. When you buy something from Apple, you don't own it. All P2E gaming means to me is that when you EARN an item in the game, you own it.

What is the future of P2E?

When trying to get people to understand Digital Ownership and how that will change the future of gaming, I like to use World of Warcraft (WOW) as a comparison. WOW had an enormous economy, auction house, and more items than you could list. By the Terms of Service (ToS), you would be banned if you sold anything for real-world money, and many people were. The future of Play-to-Earn gaming is one where you own what you earn and are free to do with it as you wish.
