The future of fashion is digital

This is a weekly newsletter brought to you by a former fashion editor, aka me, Lina. I will particularly cover digital wearables and their role in the gaming and fashion industry.

The Wearables Daily will feature and acknowledge all industry talents and tell their stories.

IS EVERYTHING DIGITAL NOW?

Did you notice? Every big fashion brand is now buzzing about the Metaverse! A perfect example is the recent Minecraft collaboration with Burberry - the partnership that includes a virtual Burberry experience in the Minecraft game and a physical limited Burberry collection with iconic Minecraft 6-bit graphics, items starting with $250 for Landscape Print Cotton Square Scarf.

The virtual worlds or Metaverses play a crucial role in today's advertising game. Maybe that's why whale Meta is pouring billions into web3? Another great example of a high-end fashion brand making moves in the web3 space is Gucci. Once lost, the brand regained its strength with a new approach to fashion and now presenting its newest partnership with Sandbox, a virtual world where players can build, own, and monetize their gaming experiences in the Ethereum blockchain.

"Open from October 27-November 9, Gucci Vault Land is a meeting place in Sandbox Metaverse where curiosity awaits in every corner. From the Vintage Lab to the Reverso Room, the many facets of Vault play out in surprising forms, including a limited collection of digital collectibles."

It is just a few examples of iconic luxury brands making their mark in the Metaverse and reaching a whole new audience, most likely Gen Z, which is not usually interested in old-school heritage brands.

METAVERSE FASHION TRENDS

Just recently, Roblox, in collaboration with Parsons School of Design, conducted a survey that helped them to create Metaverse Trends Report. The very first ever Metaverse Trend Report ever. Here are the full research and my key takeaways from it.

  • Half of the survey respondents say they are changing their avatar's clothing at least every week, and for 2 in 5 self-expression (via clothing and accessories) in the digital world is already MORE important than expressing themselves in the physical world.

  • Nearly 3 in 4 say they will spend money on digital fashion, with over 1 in 4 having spent from $20 to $100 or more on a single virtual item.

  • Over the course of 2022, over 11.5 million creators have designed more than 62 million clothing and accessory items on Roblox. That's a 25% increase from last year in the number of creators making digital goods on Roblox in January-September 2022.

  • Now more than half (58%)* of Gen Z believing that a career as a digital fashion designer is just as impressive, or even more impressive, than the role of a physical fashion designer.

*Based on survey fielded September 19-21, 2022, among 1,000 people ages 14 to 24, living in the United States.

SPOOKY DECENTRALAND

It's my very first Halloween in Decentraland. And I am spooked! My pumpkins on the Butterfly Prawn game are giving me treats, and little animal ghosts disappear sooner than I catch them. But the biggest challenge is the new whole experience designed and presented by DappCraft. At the time of writing, I am still stuck on Day3, so anyone willing to guide me - is very welcome.

Tell us more about what Decentraland looked like when you joined the space and what were your first thoughts about?

When I joined Decentraland in November 2021, it was out of curiosity, as I only knew about the Mana coin before. I started with a guest account and I found the graphics satisfying, it also was interesting with all the users there to engage with. I danced at the lounge of the Genesis Plaza and started fist pumping right away, which I never really stopped loving and doing all the time. I switched to a wallet account to save the Wondermine progress and attended music events for a couple weeks. My approach was to go on day by day, until creating caught my interest! I had no Twitter account for some months and I made one during DCL 2nd birthday in February, never stopped creating since then!

How wearables evolved during that time?

One year ago, there were a total of 600 wearables compared to the current 7000! The quality was similar, but it felt perhaps a little more special to possess them. Some engine modification about how the wearables were displayed occurred throughout the months, such as glow with transparency that looks more opaque now. With time, the skin category was added and it allowed for more complex wearables with multiple different textures. And I have to mention the financial side of creating! The publication cost went from 2000 dollars to reach as low as 70 dollars, impeding the creativity of the community to be more reasonable. It was then set to a constant 150 dollars by the community a couple months back.

In your eyes, what is the future of wearables?

In my eyes, the creators will get used to it more and more to create wearables in a virtual context that are defying the laws of physics in a real-life setting. The innovation with VR and AR will also be interesting in that regard! For Decentraland specifically, I think some avenues of progression for wearables can be envisioned, such as animated texture or models, enhanced triangles or texture allowances, and access to different material settings such as metallic reflections and transparency refraction.
