PFP fashion takes its first steps

This is a weekly newsletter brought to you by a former fashion editor, aka me, Lina. I will particularly cover digital wearables and their role in the gaming and fashion industry.

The Wearables Daily will feature and acknowledge all industry talents and tell their stories.

Introduction

While talking about digital fashion, I always highlight how people dress their avatars. With time, it seemed not a crazy idea, as we're all used to dressing our avatars, for example, while playing a traditional computer game. But what about PFPs, that people are so drawn to? What else can we do with them besides putting them as Twitter profile pictures?

Some PFP fashion examples

For example, Invisible Friends, a collection of 5000 animated invisible characters by Markus Magnusson, announced a fashion partnership earlier this year. Premium brand Kith collaborated with BMW to make Invisible Friends NFTs evolve. Changed artwork wears Kith for BMW clothes and accessories. There were no new sales of NFTs — just existing Kith Friends changing artwork into Kith for BMW Friends.

Also, the Bored Ape Yacht Club by Yuga Labs announced a partnership with Adidas last year.

A marketplace to dress your PFP

I know it may seem strange, but the least expected way to consume digital fashion, but inevitable, is through PFPs. Dress your Bored Ape in a Christmas Santa hat on a dedicated marketplace, for example. It will lighten the mood and add to your BAYC collection, making it, well - a PFP NFT fashion closet? As these new, accessorized looks are minted as separate NFTs, I sense that it will definitely increase the value of a PFP. So, for example, while buying a PFP, I will take a second look at what kind of closet it will bring with it.

Linked PFPs

Woodies, an Ethereum-based NFT collection and Web3 entertainment brand from UltraDAO, came to life as linked wearable avatars in the Decentraland metaverse earlier this year.

"Woodies owners can now experience their Woodie as an animated character in Decentraland," said Richard Powazynski, Co-Founder of Woodies. "You can move throughout the world and interact with other users as your own personal Woodie. Since each Woodie is unique, your Woodie represents your own individuality and ethos. This builds on the emotional connection people have with their NFTs, and adds to the value of digital ownership."

These are just a few examples of how PFP fashion is evolving step by step. PFPs represent us in the digital world as much as our avatars do. And we all like to change just enough to stay in fashion.
